Chapter Eleven

BOWIE

The past week and a half dragged, one uneventful day after the other, and I still had six more days to go before I could see Chrissie again. For the past month, we’d been enjoying each other almost daily, our nights blending into days. It turned out that neither of us enjoyed the boredom of our lonely lives. On the nights that I worked, she’d hang out at her place until I got off and picked her up. I had even become the office lunch runner on my free days. It was weird how quickly we’d fallen into a routine. Everything was going great, but it was the start of training camp, and her ex needed to be monitored like a toddler on and off the field. A huge part of me felt like it was a ploy to keep the attention on him and away from her entertaining other men. Even on the days we spent together he’d randomly attempt to facetime then precede to call if she dared to decline.

I tried to be the bigger man, laughing off his constant interruptions but a man could only take so much. Hell, even today I was struggling to focus on this damn routine thinking he’d pop up at the camp while she visited the kids. He insisted they drive down together for parents’ weekend, but she managed to get out of it, claiming she had to work today and would just head out tomorrow. I had to give it to her. She was patient like no other yet had shown our situation nothing but loyalty. Each day she was making it harder and harder not to utter that four-letter word. The few texts we exchanged were just enough to calm the dull ache, but her presence was the only thing that would actually heal it.

“Did you hear me?” Mayson snapped, standing shirtless in the center of the stage as Justice lay sprawled out, his legs dangling from the edge, while I sat, propped up by the wall, ignoring his rant.

“We hear you, but you’re doing way too much,” Justice huffed, tossing a balled-up piece of paper in the air. “You have fifty-eleven moves and haven’t even picked out a song to see if the shit matches. It’s ten minutes, bro, ten minutes before we’re off this stage doing our own thing. Simplicity. That’s the name of the game.”

“Look, it’s my first Saturday headlining, and I want my shit to look crisp. That wild boy energy you bring, save it for your set. Smooth, refined, classic. That’s the energy for tonight. I’m on my Bond shit,” he informed, breaking into a spin.

“News flash, bro. Bond is more for dudes, not ladies. You’re going to ruin your chance before it even starts.” Justice laughed, referring to their Saturday night switch.

After throwing a fit with Dee-Dee about Justice headlining Saturdays, she offered Mayson one shot to convince her, unleashing his inner diva.

I couldn’t care less about who headlined what and on what night.
